As from April 1999, the Reichstag building is the official seat of the German parliament. Its construction was finished in 1890, but in the Reichstag fire on 28-02-1933 the interior, and especially the plenary chamber, were partly destroyed. Again, during the last days of war, it was damaged and burned out. Since the end of Worl War II the Sovjet Union didn't allow a German parliament in the Reichstag. But after the reunification it was decided that Berlin would be the future seat of government. The interior was completely hollowed out and the plenary chamber is now below an elliptical glass dome on a round base with ramps leading to the top. |
